Unfortunately, that would have been Corbyn, who probably set the Labour party back a couple of decades.

Meanwhile, the "nationalized"" grid in Cuba.

They just shut it off.

What is obscene, is that people will die of the cold this winter, because they cant afford to heat their homes.
What is obscene is that energy companies have made more profits in the last few months than ever before.

"Shell posted record earnings of $11.4bn (nearly £10bn) for the three-month period from April to June and promised to give shareholders payouts worth £6.5bn.

Asked about the stark contrast with punishingly high bills faced by households already struggling amid sky-high inflation, Shell’s chief executive, Ben van Beurden, said the company could not “perform miracles” to bring oil and gas prices down, adding: “It is what it is.”

Are you willing to pay a little extra tax to support them when they lose money, to cap their profits when times are good?

Both of our countries are marching towards a recession.

If it's any consolation, that will cut heavily into oil company profits.

Might even be layoffs again.

"A review published in March 2020 by Warwick Business School of a range of ‘resource estimates’ and production forecasts produced by the industry organisation UK Onshore Oil and Gas calculated that UK fracking might produce between 90 and 330 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas between 2020 and 2050. Using future demand figures from National Grid, they calculated that could represent between 17 and 22 per cent of projected cumulative UK consumption over that period. "

Well I am retired now, though tax is still taken off me everytime I open my purse or check my investments.

My area pays more in council tax than most others....thank to Andy Burnham, but I dont moan, as it's going towards the upgrading of local amenities  in this area (allegedly)

I know if I was billions in profit, I would be happy to take a cut, sadly, it doesn't work like that.

Everyone loses power at times because of catastrophic weather.

Most place don't lose power because the sun came up or set..

Are the companies not taking a cut when they post a loss?

The price of oil is over $100 barrel.  Oil companies will do very well at that price.

When it's $40 they lose their ass.

It's been both prices during the past two years.

"Oil and gas companies have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, which crushed global demand for crude and petroleum products such as gasoline and jet fuel. Unlike past downturns, oil and gas companies have been under increased financial pressure after many investors pulled out of the sector in 2018 after years of low-to-middling performance. Several energy companies said they were forced to file for bankruptcy after lenders pulled credit lines as revenue dried up."

Its a very cyclical business. You have to look at earnings over the years, not months.

The energy companies that are left, are making huge profits, as we have said.
Many small energy companies have collapsed recently, the giants have taken over.

A bit like when a huge supermarket opens, the smaller shops can't compete, they go out of business.

Once the supermarket has the overall business, they can charge what they like, and we the shopper, have no option but to pay.
People need to eat, just as they need the energy to heat their homes, many are finding they cant afford to do both.
Centrica own British gas, which many ordinary UK households use...the prices are being increased by up to 500%...their profits are higher than ever.

Greed feeds greed, the customer is caught in the middle.... and yet you don't agree with the government helping these households out? would you rather people starve or freeze to death?

BP have now reported profits of £6.9 billion from April to June this year, their biggest profit in 14 years.
Meanwhile, the predictions for consumer energy prices to be at an unprecedented high, are said to be here for at least the next 18 months.

"Energy company BP made the announcement today, revealing its biggest quarterly success for 14 years.

Energy prices in the UK are soaring right now, and consultancy firm Cornwall Insight has forecasted that typical bills could rise to £3,600 per year by winter.

BP’s latest profits announcement has led to calls for intervention from the Government to help people who are struggling with rising prices.

A BP statement described an “exceptional oil trading performance” as one of the key reasons for its success."

One man's success seems to be at the expense of another man dying of hypothermia or starvation, because he can't afford to heat his home or cook a meal....in one of the 'richest' countries on this planet.

It's the same way in much of Europe right now. They are wealthy too.

It's a lack of planning that created supply issues.  Those supply issues will translate into higher costs..

The problem isn't necessarily what is happening now, it's piss poor planning in the past.

It's relying on a shit country for something that you need.

Part of your wealth are your resources. Tap into them..

Government is the reason you have shortages.

It is your problem, not your savior.

So if they are the reason, it's only morally right they should now help out the people who need help...which is more or less the majority of British households.
