The dominant idea in Britain and the west today is consumerism and to maximise consumerism and profit from it it is best to have a mass (atomised) "me me" society.  This goes far beyond how empires of the past managed its people.  One of the most disturbing trends in Western Democratic Societies is the quality and experience of our politicians and our leaders.
