Why do forums fail?

Obviously, for a number of reasons.

The main one is disinterest, but many a forum carries on supported by a handful of posters for ages. This one has been busy, dead, and in between.

The Mirror, probably the biggest and the best, closed down overnight, obviously more went on behind the scenes than was let on.

A couple of forums I know are still there, once busy, now derelict, people can still post on them, sadly no one bothers.

Why do you stick around on a forum?

On Dogs we stick around out of loyalty to someone who’s provided us with a place to post for years and years.

Also no bullying allowed, no threads about people on other forums, no hate.  So it’s a safe space.  It’s home.  Real community.

dunno Force of habit I guess, Syl.

Apart from a few posts here every few weeks or so, I haven’t posted over the road since i was perma‘d just before Covid hit in early 2020 - apart from a couple of guest posts to say the news of Ariz‘s death saddened me, and one to wish some names I recognised a Merry Christmas. Nothing could ever inspire me to want to post there again - the place is stale and depressing AF these days.

I do read though - a lot! Mostly SM sites, like FB/Twitter/Insta etc. And the reason I still read here and over the road is that it’s interesting to see how both forums continue to evolve, and to see the ebb and flow and the interaction between the ‘forum names’ I’ve been around since 2014.

you couldn't have been posting loyally for years and years then

I enjoy posting here.  nod I also posted on Cans, but lost the link ages ago. Didn't know anyone else there to get the link from.  I think many former forumers post fb, twitter etc. now.

I don't post anywhere else now.

Umm…hello? DS threads - all 125 of them. Each one of those threads runs to around 100 pages. There used to be other forums listed in the thread title too. Just sayin’! wink

I know Dogs is supposed to be new and improved, and a harmonious rainbow farts echo chamber. But maybe that’s why it so often seems like Tumbleweed Central these days.

Good point about people sticking to a forum out of loyalty. I think that's true. Quite a few posters stuck by Micky and posted in the three (I think) forums that he headed.

If you find a forum where you don't personally feel bullied, good for you. I tend to look at how others are treated on forums too, it gives a far fairer picture.

You may not be victimised , but if others are, or even were, that put's a whole different slant on it.

 Same here Mags...just here.

I have dabbled my toe in quite a few over the years, sadly they are either no more, or they just get too tedious to bother with.

I stick around because I enjoy conversation and debate with people I sorta know for years now.

I imagine they fail because of competition. Sorta like MySpace did.

Habit, and I also think interacting with people online is quite addictive.

I don't do Facebook or Twitter, I prefer the concept of actually having an ongoing conversation rather than a sentence or two.

Oh but I have darling.  Anything nasty in the past was us responding to threats and illegal behaviour from other people and forums such as BF.  We never instigated it.  You’re going to have to suck that up I’m afraid.

You could be right.  Any victimised on here, for instance darling, right now?

No...we don't stand for victimising any of our members on here....and don't call me darling, it makes you sound like a patronising prat.

Don’t ya darling?  You said “I tend to look at how others are treated on forums too”.  You didn‘t say other members, you said others.  And there are others on here right now that are being victimised.  Would you agree my sweet? vd

Often on forums, just as in life, people will get back what they have given out, that's not victimisation, that's  Karma.wink

Now stop trying to sweet talk me, I am a respectable married woman. ragga

Over modding, instead of just making sure no T&C rules are broken. Admin loves to decide what threads can run just because they aren't interested in the subject matter.

You're in the wrong sub mate. the joke thread is over there --->

I see what you did there though.

I'd say you enabled the dogs owner in fairness sitting back while he abused and stalked women. Some of whom you post alongside herebdh
