Why do forums fail?

People just seem to lose interest, so kudos to the ones that are still up and running.
I wonder what the age demographic is for most forums? I'd say middle aged to old age judging by the ages of people across the forums I've known.

This is just my own take on it - I think forums started to become a thing around the early 2000s, so 20 years ago. Many people who used them were in their 30s or maybe 40s, so will be in their 50s or 60s now. I think that at one time forum interaction was mainly about the novelty of the whole thing, and also just mucking around and having a laugh. Nowadays it's become more and more about winning arguments - which gets tedious after a while and might be why people are giving up and forums are failing.

I agree forums are for older folk.

I know for sure when I was young, looking after a family, then even when I was a nan, still in my 40's, I had no time for the internet, life was a lot busier.

I think younger people prefer the likes of Twitter and TikTok, they are not interested in reading or writing about news items, and if they have any sense they don't want to log in and argue....like forums of old.

Mumsnet amazes me, it's incredibly busy, and the majority of posters (unless they are lying) seem to have young families. I don't know how they have the time.
