They sent a robot sub down and found a lot of debris. Now sadly they say it must have imploded on the way down.

Well, that's probably better than the alternative of sitting there for days, likely going crazy, locked in a steel can..
Death would be almost instantaneous.
Obviously being rescued was the preferred outcome, but if that wasn't in the cards, whoosh, bang, lights out in two seconds ain't the worst way to go, even if it's far sooner than you like.

I agree, much better scenario than waiting to die. They wouldn't have known anything.
