"Prisons are under "huge pressure", a Government minister admitted on Thursday, following reports that judges have been told not to send some rapists and burglars to jail because they are full.
Health Secretary Steve Barclay refused to confirm or deny reports that courts would not be able to jail convicted criminals due to prisons nearing capacity."
He told Sky News: "It's a longstanding convention ministers don't comment on leaks. The Lord Chancellor will make a statement to Parliament on Monday."
But he said that jails are "under huge pressure", and that is the case in "many countries", adding it is due to the Government ensuring prisoners are in jail "for longer" and because of "pressures as a result of Covid".
"Those spared being put behind bars could include convicts found guilty of burglary and rape, the newspaper said.
It quoted an anonymous senior judge as saying that they had been “ordered/strongly encouraged” during a meeting not to send to jail a defendant who appears before them on bail due to concerns that cells are at capacity."
The fight for women's rights, which started with the Suffragette movement 120 years ago, seems to have gone backwards since then
We may have won the right to vote, but we can be attacked and raped with less chance of the attacker facing justice...and some would even try to erase the very state of womanhood altogether.
I fear for the youth of today....the diminishment of women won't make the men stronger, just confused.
Disgusting imo. Rapists should be imprisoned, not on bail to strike again. Women, children will not be safe anymore. It seems to me women and children are pushed further down the line now. I'm disgusted!
It was the same in the 70's which eventually led to the Strangeways riots. 4 to a cell a cell designed for one man to have a bad time in. Funny thing is Holland have been closing their nicks down and making prison staff redundant. Spain and Portugal are starting to look like they may well be following suit soon.

I would never blame anyone for taking revenge (getting justice) in cases of rape, if the judicial system failed them.
Problem is vigilante justice sometimes gets it wrong.
I suppose that will be the price society pays if serious criminals are left to roam freely.
