Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson's throat was cut by an opponent's skate blade when they collided during a match against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday.
The 29-year-old briefly stood up, bleeding profusely on to the ice, before collapsing again during the game in Sheffield. He received immediate medical attention, with CPR performed on the ice, and was taken to hospital but could not be saved.
Sheffield Steelers player Matt Petgrave, 31, fatally cut his opponent's throat in a freak accident when they collided during a match in front of 8,000 horrified fans.
Petgrave crashed into one of Johnson's teammates on Saturday, which appeared to knock him off balance before his leg lifted up and sliced across Johnson's neck.
Now, I've watched the footage of this in slow mo. And it's very clear that Petgrave tries to tackle a first player, loses his balance then kicks up in an effort to tackle Johnson. Petgrave has form for being a dirty player, and has several PIMs for bad behaviour on the ice.
Watch it yourself and make your mind up. What's really telling is that Petgrave just skates off. If you thought you'd accidently hurt someone you'd be going back there to check them out, not skating off. But you would skate off if you did it deliberately.

Hockey isn't like soccer. Soccer is the beautiful game. Hockey is warfare on ice. It's hard to say if it was intentional, but hockey players will mostly definitely skate off after injuring someone.

Only Americans refer to football as soccer but we know what you mean.
