RIP Fred.

"Coronation Street legend John Savident has died aged 86.

The actor was best known for playing the butcher Fred Elliott in the ITV soap.

Savident’s agent confirmed news of his death on Friday (23 February).

“We are sad to announce the death of the actor John Savident who died on Wednesday 21st February,” an official statement read.

“He was a much-loved husband and father of two and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”

Savident joined the Manchester-based soap in 1994, quickly charming viewers as the haughty, booming-voiced butcher, Fred.

Corrie fans were consistently entertained by Fred’s quirky turns of phrase, including his habit of dotting “I say, I say” into his sentences."

I watch the classic Corries...the episodes that aired about 20 years ago.

It's sad how many well loved characters from that show are no longer with us.

Jack and Vera, Deirdre and Blanch, fit and well in the classics, now long gone.

Yep, 86 is a good age...he was always overweight too...so all in all, like you say, a good innings.

We used to see him around sometimes, he drove a little open top, his mum was in a nursing home not far from here.

Aww I bet he was nice in real life, just think he would be.

He was stabbed by a young lad he tried to pick up in Canal Street a while back.  Although I believe he was married to a woman.

He had a nice, kind face.

I have never been a huge fan of Coro, but i did watch it ever so often, so i do remember him.

It's sad, but 86 isn't a bad age, lets hope we all make it that far.

Does anyone here watch Emmerdale?

That's my go to soap on occasions grin

The actor who used to play Zak (Steve Halliwell)  the patriarch of the Dingle family, has also died in December at the age of 77, yet they're keeping him alive atm, by saying he can't attend family functions because he injured his foot.

I am guessing people liked the character he played rather than the real life actor himself - in which one generally is clueless about - unless one knows them personally.

I don't know the actor, but he also has a nice friendly face.

I think, with long-running soaps like Corrie, Emmerdale, Eastenders etc, we get so used to seeing these actors on our TV's, often for decades, it does come as a shock when we suddenly hear they have died.

Their personal lives have little to do with how we see them, they ARE the characters they play, which is why, when so many leave, the majority don't go on to bigger and better things. They have been typecast, and it's a real career killer.

He actually was in Corrie too before 1994, according to Wikipedia.

Yes you're right, he does have a kind grandpa face, and he was a good actor.

I also watch Eastenders sometimes, I like watching it while I make dinner nod

It's sad when characters you watched for years die.

Like Peggy Mitchel ( Barbara Windsor) Dot Cotton (June Brown) Pauline Fowler (Wendy Richards) Frank Butcher (Mike Reid) Dan Watts ( Leslie Grantham) Angie Watts (Anita Dobson) and a few more.

Indeed she is. Poor Anita will be shocked to learn she's dead!

She pops up quite a lot on TV, and she is still happily married to Queens Brian May.

A good friend of mine had an 'experience' with this guy many years ago.   He was delivering furniture when he was in his teens and 'Fred' opened the door wearing only a dressing gown.  Upstairs he let the dressing gape and exposed himself to my friend.  He said it was  horrible and he was really scared, couldn't wait to get out of the house.  Dirty old pig.

Shades of Michael Barrymore. He used to foist himself on unsuspecting lads....years before he actually came out.
