The land is so full of history and historical places.
How about starting in a place that when you've experienced it you discover it's a world within worlds.
The canals... two thousand miles open and working at present many dating from the mid 1700's.
They were dug across the land through mountains across valleys to move lumber coal iron textiles and much more and before the train arrived they were the backbone of the industrial revolution at home.
About 25 years ago someone loaned me a sixty foot long barge... ten minute driving and loch lesson... I was dubious.
Dubious because the the thought of doing 4mph all day every day was seriously at odds with my whole being.
As it turned out when the week was up I didn't want to leave the canal... I wanted to live there on a barge for the rest of my days.
You travel through towns and villages under high speed motorways and the world is mostly oblivious to you.
You can go through city centres and people never see you!
Your average Brit knows very little about canal history or modern canal life.
Take a look at this....

A million years ago I was a pre law student (I changed that major). We were required to take an English history class. Not French, German or Spanish history. Just American and English history.

Our food is getting better over here but that's due to immigration, ironically.

We don't have people like that any longer Mads.
When you look at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct it just wouldn't happen today.
Two hundred years ago there was a valley in the way of the canal building so they built a huge aqueduct to cross that valley.
There were mountains in the way too but they just said well go through them then!
We no longer produce such men.

I think you still do.
I was having a discussion with a few females this morning on Facebook. It was about men in general and how they can be a threat to women.
I agreed with them, but also told them that there are other men that know this, and will warn/protect you from these men. Women often call these protective men like me or my son in laws primitive or backwards.
So the men with the "right stuff" still exist, all be it quietly at times while some whiney, weird boy gets the attention dor being "stunning and brave"..

There's some breathtaking places in the UK. Particularly up North which has a rep for being 'grim'. This is a part of Southport where I grew up. And that's the house I grew up in. It was a lovely town.

I've been out of the USA.
I dont think crummy really means dirty.
And I was mostly commenting on the global influence of small island/country.
No other similar sized country has had near the impact. Spain comes close based on its wide-spread language, but most of it's former colonies have issues that stem from the mother country.
The UK is beautiful, far more picturesque than all the countries I have been to.
Granted, I visit hotter countries which we are not one of, but that makes us the ;green and pleasant land' that we are known for.
