How did Delia Derbyshire create the Doctor Who theme?
She is considered a pioneer in 20th century electronic music based at the BBC's
radiophonic workshop.
Derbyshire's composition was created by recording found sounds. Back in the 1960s, there was no music software available. To make the theme, Derbyshire recorded sounds onto physical tape – including a plucked piano string, wooden blocks and clanging metal and the doctor who theme became one of the most famous tv theme tunes in the world.

In 1969 she released an album called electric storm and called herself White noise so she could remain anonymous and appear to be yet another 1960's psychedelic band.

Here's a track from the album which had pretty good global success.

Firebird...

This simp

Gershon Kingsley - Popcorn - The world's first electronic hit single (TOTP 1969)

This simple piece was so brilliant at the time and became a massive global hit and was redone numerous times over the years by others.

Yello - The Race

These  two  guys hardly ever met when they started releasing their early stuff.

One would put the sound together send it to the other and he would write and record the lyrics in another studio.

The guy singing was from a wealthy family and at the time of their first record release he was a very wealthy banker doing this stuff for fun!

Yello - The Rhythm Divine with Shirley Bassey.

She loved the then new sound of Yello. Got to meet them and this is what happened... what a voice!

Classical meets electronic.

This lady plays the Theremin beautifully and it isn't as easy as it may look.

I've often thought about getting one but this lady is probably the best player I've seen.

OK this one is not electronic music but sounds like it might be.

This is music from a circular violin which

is a circular saw.

Instead of the saw being placed in the cutting position it's place in a record player position on a vibrating pole.

The saw blade is played with a violin bow with a rubber placed in the fist of the other hand to press down on certain spots to alter the you get it.

But hillbilly bands use it to add the odd violin sweep sound etc this guy plays a whole mournful tune on it... very difficult.

Tom Waits - "Fawn"
