Andy Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, he is Labour. He served as Shadow Home Secretary from 2015/16 and was a MP for Leigh from 2001 to 2017.

He has said openly he doesn't agree with denying 10 million pensioners the winter fuel payment, he gives a % of his salary every month to charity, and when asked about the £54 a day food allowance alĺ MP's recieve, he said when he was an MP he refused it, MP's should buy their own food like everyone else.

He has compassion, and he isn't afraid to speak his mind....unlike the yes/men and women who are simpering round the present government.

If he ever decides to run for parliament again, (and he doesn't rule it out) he would make a good leader.
He has been in politics for decades, and seems to be one of the few who hasn't been corrupted by money and power...plus he has a backbone and he sticks to his principles.

I am an OAP, you may or may not be, but chances are you love someone who is, mum, dad, nan, grandad, sweet old lady down the road ,etc.

I don't need the winter fuel payment and I don't use buses, but I am speaking for the people who do use and need them. Are people now so desensitised to the plight of others that they don't care?
This government is running roughshod over the very people who have voted Labour all their lives, the working classes who have paid into the system here for 50 plus years, millions who have worked hard and not expected society to hand out freebies when they were able to work and earn for themselves.

I think this present shower are hoping all the old people will be dead by the time the next general election comes around, they are grooming the future voters now, VOTE LABOUR, LOOK AFTER YOURSELF, KILL OFF THE OLD FOLK.

I use my bus pass at times, it's so handy, I'm disgusted. I know many will ride buses to keep warm now, they won't have bus passes to do that. They also rely on buses for shopping, visiting etc.

Just looked it up. This is actually true. He simply won't answer the question about why he is targetting old people...his stock answer is he has to find money from somewhere because the last government left such a huge debt.

He says he is gathering money from the people whose shoulders are the broadest, in his opinion this is obviously the pensioners.

A third rail is an issue that politicians and officials don’t want to touch because it’s too controversial. The idiom refers to the actual third rail used in electric rail systems. The third rail carries a high voltage, so touching it is extremely dangerous.

He will learn the hard way, not all pensioners are feeble little old people who wait to be told what to do.

Once people retire here, they could have a good 25, 30 plus years to hang around and make sure this lying bastard has as short a term as possible....that's if the Labour MP's with a backbone don't get rid of him first.

To be honest, I'm pretty surprised these cuts are coming from Labour.

I imagine this isn't going to fly and these plans will have to be replaced with some sort of large tax increases on workers.

The smartest way would be to add to the VAT. People don't directly see that and its a sneaky way to tax the people. But sneaky works..

Or you could just do what we do (you really can't though because we have the world's currency), and just kick the can down the road..

American taxpayers just paid 1 trillion in interest on our debt this year. A trillion in tax dollars not spent on healthcare, education, research, defense, but on interest. It's almost 20% of out budget now.

And it's just growing exponentially..

They should rename the Labour Party now, because present Labour bares no resemblance to the Labour party that used to be, that one had the ordinary man in the street, (including the old) at heart.

This one is governed by greed, plus they are funded heavily by the unions, and they seem to be demanded more and more, Starmer hasn't got the backbone to negotiate fairly.
The Labour working class MP's have been bought and paid for....take the deputy PM for eg, she is a bloody disgrace, and as she is a local MP, I should know.

Your Labour Party has evolved much like our Democratic Party. They claim to support the working class, but really think of them as unsophisticated boors.

That being said, some painful decisions have to be made.

That's probably a good idea.

It makes no difference in terms of cuts that make a difference, but optics are important for politicians.

You have to convince the people that you as a politician will be sharing in the impacts of spending cuts..
