You should look into an insta-pot though. I thought of it as a bit of a gimmick, but it's really nice to just stick something in there, set the timer and forget it. No stirring or checking on anything amd you make stuff in about 1/4 of the time.

I think that roast you made the other day would take about an hour, and all that pressure makes the meat tender..

And if you want a long way to cook very tender meat, get a sous vide cooker. Many restaurants use these. But it's the opposite of an insta-pot in terms of time. It adds a couple hours to cooking a steak, although its hands free and you could go for a walk while meat is in the sous vide bath..

Maybe, but the 4/5 hour stew or braised steak, warms the house all afternoon and the cooking smells are gorgeous.

 True.  Amd burns more energy.

And except for shitty weather days, I don't sit around smelling my food.

When I made my beans, I was cooking something else. So by the time I was done, I had several meals finished

Making your own stock would be boiling bones for hours. I've done that when I have time, but it's easier to buy stock already made, and it tastes better than adding water to cubes.

That's basically dehydrated food..

That's how gravy was made before stock cubes.  The meat juices and fat and veg water thickened with flour.

Tonight.
Big pan of stew on the stove.
Stewing steak, potatoes, carrots, onions, oxo, salt, black pepper, all in a pan, cook for 5 hours, one of the simplest meals and great to warm you up on a cold miserable day.

 What is oxo?.

Its a beef stock cube, mix it with water or meat juices...in this case 2 cups of water, it thickens up to give a rich gravy.

Oxo is loaded with msg.   Horrible stuff.

You didn't taste my stew, it was delicious.

I eat healthily, not deliberately, I just like foods that are considered to be good...I can afford to waver now and again.

You should never take my comments personally.   I don't doubt your stew was heavenly and I know you eat well coz you look like you do.   You look amazing.

Really? MSG is considered safe unless you exceed 2 or 3 grams a day. How much is in an oxo cube?

 Read back.

Brown the meat (pork loin).
Cook the holy Trinity (onion, celery, bell pepper) with garlic and a jalapeño.
Throw it all in the insta-pot with the dried beans, spices, stock and let her rip.

Christ, I can't eat beans.   I'm fucking jet propelled if I do.

I hate pressure cookers.  I always think they're going to blow up.   My mum used to have one years ago with this weight thingie on top that hissed.  It cooked spuds in 30 seconds.

Thats gravy though, not stock. People still make gravy that way. Do those cubes actually thicken anything or just add flavor to water? I know people that drink them in a cup of hot water. I don't think they are dinking gravy, but flavored water.

The new ones are different. They don't hiss.

Depends on the meat.  Chicken, fish or veg stew can be made in a shorter time than that.

I can eat kidney beans in chili and that's about it.   I once tried green lentils.  It was like bloody Armageddon.

Chia seeds absorb a lot of liquid and are much better for you than flour..
