 I think it may be more to pacify the massive mouthpieces of the trans community, myself.

I see stores now that don't have girls wear and boys wear... they label it all childrens wear. My local M&S recently had women's summer clothes on a male mannequin, and I have to say, it looked bloody ridiculous.

 I can see ftm finding wearing trousers “validating“ but mtf? - they seem to be into that schoolgirl look.
