He is a hero.

A couple of nights ago I saw, on the bedroom ceiling...a SPIDER...cry

He isn't struck on them himself, so catching them and putting them safely outside is never going to happen in our house. That would be my preferred method, but beggars can't be choosers.

Anyway, naked as a jaybird and armed with a paper roll, he climbed on the bed, stretching precariously and wobbling about (I could do with a firmer mattress, really). He caught the little blighter and put it to rest down the loo.

It's now Spider season here, a time of year I hate.

Just saw this lol I can almost picture the scene, but I’m trying not to lol

Anyway, take heart because there’s always someone much worse off… scruffy

OMG...I have never heard of that happening before, it must have been terrifying.cry

I love bats(obviously not in my mouth) we have loads circling around the garden every night at dusk...they are fascinating to watch.

It will probably stay east. At this point it's just heavy rain which is what we need..

"I believe that if we don't slow down at the current rate of progress, there is a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future," warns AI researcher who quit Anthropic

Scientists and researchers who work for AI companies have warned that In 6 months to a year, a swarm of bots acting like a super computer could take over the internet, and that there is a 10% chance that all humans could be killed within 10 years.

If only this sort have thing could have been predicted........

I just re-read the first few pages of this thread from a year ago, and there are plenty of posts claiming AI can't go rogue because it's just computer code and is programmed by humans.

Look how quickly that changed!

When AI experts are giving out such warnings, I think it's time to listen...if it's not too late.

I think it's a bit like a runaway train gathering speed. I would bet the vast majority of us have no idea how far it's already advanced.

It's too late to slow down the progress, otherwise we will be sitting ducks for other countries who won't slow down, ie Russia, China etc.

It's the same as the nuclear programme, when all the major countries developed missiles just as a deterrent to stop other countries from firing at them.

It beggars belief how enthusiastic scientists and world leaders were when AI starting being developed, as if only good would ever come from it - but you could see it a mile off what the obvious future problems could be.

Technology moves so fast now, I doubt anyone knew how fast AI would come in so short a time.
Mad scientists could be in charge of the global future, and judging by the leaders of the most powerful countries...they probably are.

Computers are used for almost everything. AI can be used by programming in info that can save human beings operating the technology.

I always thought it depended on what human beings programmed in AI, but it's becoming obvious it's not that simple.

If scientists who have worked with and studied AI are worried, I dread to think what they know.

Thanks Syl.  Yes  I thought computers only had info put into it like you thought.  It's way above me now tbh, scary too in a way.

A (what I view as a serious) CNN news anchor reported last night that AI is now so far advanced that “it could potentially take control of America’s entire infrastructure any time it chooses to.”

There are also reports swirling around that groups of bots have gone rogue by inventing their own indecipherable language to communicate amongst themselves.

A question I happen to agree with is being repeatedly asked on Social Media: “When was the last time a for-profit organisation begged the government to regulate it?”

I doubt these top frontier AI people like Altman, Amodei, and even Musk, are clamouring for government intervention just out of the goodness of their hearts 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yup. And it wouldn't take long for chaos to let loose if say the power plants were taken off line all at once.

Gas stations couldn't pump gas, refrigerated food would spoil.

No matter adept one is at roughing it, most of us can't survive long without modern technology. We built our cities around it.

Let's just take my county of over 2 million people.  There isn't enough food here to last more than a week.

Then folks scatter to the country side. There isn't really enough food there either. Not for 32 million people in our state.

nod I’m visualising a Venn diagram as I type.

From morality/conscientiousness/caring/integrity….to uncompromising self-preservation….ultimately resulting in feral inhumanity. I doubt it would take too long for that to evolve….

I'll have to change my name from Maddog to Mad Max..

Apart from all the power and transport stuff - imagine never having the internet again! Most of us go crazy if we lose it for an hour or two.

We'll probably all be running around in rags and covered in dirt like orphans from a Charles Dickens novel.

Then I suppose we'll have to start eating each other.

But as Red says, there’d be no fuel for your Interceptor, so you’d never make it to the Thunderdome snooty

@ Red…funnily enough, we had a power cut for just under a couple of hours yesterday.

30 minutes in, and I was about ready to climb the walls cry

If the bots took over the internet, most oldies would eventually cope and revert back to pre-internet skills like reading books, writing letters, and booking holidays on Ceefax

Those born into the digital age might find it more of a struggle though.
