My probably spurious point of view in this reparations discussion: I can’t help but raise an eyebrow when I think of the black-on-black atrocities going on in the world. For example ….

Will people clamour for reparation from the Boko Haram insurgents, who are wreaking homicidal havoc in their quest to rid Nigeria of every Christian they encounter?

Who will demand reparation for the barbaric violence and terror being inflicted on Haitians, by the gangs who have a chokehold control of Haiti?

Slavery was, and continues to be, horrific. Of course it should be denounced and railed against whenever possible. But there’s enough unrest and divisiveness going on in this crazy, mixed-up, fucked-up world, without adding more virtue-signalling activism.

Sometimes, people just need to take a breath and count their blessings. I’m sorry, but that’s just my opinion, fwiw.

The idea of virtue signalling intrigues me. I assume people just say what they believe, not to look good or agree with a popular view. Maybe that's naive or old fashioned of me. I suppose it happens on social media where everyone seems to adopt a persona. In order to see one of your posts Vam I had to sign up to Twitter. Well that was an experience I don't wish to relive! scared I kept seeing a gif of Starmer in a blue and yellow clowns suit.

I don't actually think Lenny Henry really wants 18 Trillion  pounds in reparations.(at least I hope not)I honestly believe it is the new dehumanizing rhetoric  concerning legal migrants and people of colour that the media is attempting to normalise that may be behind his comments.

I don't even know how this 'reparations' conversation has become a thing. It's completely mental that modern day people (from any country or of any race) should apologise or give huge sums of money to other modern day people for things that went on between their ancestors several hundreds years ago. Different people, different times.

The likes of Lenny Henry can fuck off - he is obviously playing the race card to try and jump on the gravy train

Well said Red.  I totally agree.  I never liked the so called comedian.

Imo, yes, it is virtue-signalling, Fluffster. Maybe it‘s coming from a good place, or maybe he just wants to grab some headlines and feel a bit more relevant these days. I don’t know and I don’t care 🤷🏻‍♀️ As I said, with every effed-up thing going on in the world, the last thing that’s needed is some ‘celebrity’ stirring up more divisiveness.

He surely must realise that what he’s advocating for is unlikely to ever come to fruition. It’s just making noise, for the sake of it, and I prefer celebrities who do charitable/altruistic work, without drawing attention to themselves.

Sorry but, in this context, I don’t understand the analogy or the connection you‘re making in your last paragraph.

Well not exactly, as it was discussed by journalist James O Brien on his radio show and listeners rang in and agreed. The right wing slant by the British media didn't occur over night nor has it been adopted by all broadcasters but it has certainly taken place on many news and radio stations.

It's the same in America surely. Fox News adopts a tone that supports Trump, MNSBC (I think that's the correct name?) is far more neutral (and as a result more accurate ) in its reporting of Trump's behaviour. Mentioning the shift in political commentary by certain news outlets is hardly the stuff of a vivid imagination, indeed it's commonplace. It's just got to a point where the political agenda is now transparent imo.

Reform have only 5 MP's , only 1 more than  the Green Party yet you have probably never even heard of the Green's. Because it wouldn't serve the  billionaires who own these news papers to mention The Green 's because the Green party care about the cost of living and helping ordinary working families. The powers that be want millionaire Farage in power so he can keep his fellow rich people rich hence why someone with so little official  political power has been in the media spotlight so relentlessly.

The former leader of Reform Nathan Hill even took Russian bribes but this was barely reported on! He pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery where he would receive money for creating a "supportive narrative  that would benefit Russia regarding events in.Ukraine" . I doubt you knew this though because when these people show their true colours the reporting of it is minimal. Not to mention the former member that assaulted his girlfriend. Farage wanted that hushed up. This is potentially the next party to govern our country..crazy

Madders ,permit me to ask you a question. You are American so I don't expect you to know how the various news outlets are reporting here. I would never boldly refute anything you stated concerning the American media because how on earth would I know!

Why do you seemingly want to believe I am incorrect? The gradual dehumanizing of immigrants and sadly POC has allowed Farage 's political aims to become relevant hence all the airtime he receives , despite his inconsequential party only having 5 MP's. Your news stations ,in particular Fox, report news with a right wing agenda. Why do you consider it is such a stretch that the same would occur here?

I feel like virtue signalling is internet conduct that people don't often adopt in the real world. The reparations verdict by the UN judge is something I feel LH would have usually ignored because as you pointed out, it's a prosperous sum.

Now  your last paragraph is totally accurate because my theory is somewhat far fetched in this specific incident (you are probably not surprised!)wink

Racial tensions have really increased in the UK and celebrities like Gary Neville are  drawing attention to it. Neville stated how the Union Jack is suddenly being displayed everywhere and when combined with the firm anti immigrant stance (even immigrants that have been living and working here for years) the flag display is unlikely an act of good faith. British coloured men are reporting being verbally and even physically attacked which they believe is due to Reform's divisive and unpleasant  rhetoric and frankly so do I.

Therefore It occurred to me that LH is only drawing attention to the reparations due to the rise in xenophobic  media reporting and attitudes. But he asked for money not social change so my unlikely theory is probably flat out wrong.

Fwiw Henry has raised a lot of money for good causes so this  demand for financial reward is deffo out of character. But since he knows for sure he will  not receive financial recompense I thought he was trying to bring the supposed need for reparations into the public consciousness, to remind people they are going backwards in their mentality. But I have no way of knowing this and  have  projected my feelings onto his motivations which nobody can really know.

Sorry for long post Vam. I'm just very annoyed at the media for promoting an extreme right party just so the rich can get richer still and also for a section of the public allowing their prejudices to reject their common sense the way they did with Brexit.

It's explained in another article if you click the link in the original one how these particular reparations came to be. I agree the concept itself is flawed for the reasons you gave .

We are supposed to learn from our past mistakes though  and I fear in the UK that is sadly not the case.

What?  It was this country that stopped the slave trade.

Just because we don't want fighting men invading this country doesn't mean we need to learn lessons!

The slave trade was the status quo for mankind until very recently. No country was responsible nor was only one group victims.

I agree that people should learn things..

We also had a lot of slaves but more importantly Reform voters seemingly  have no problem with Farage sending  genuine refugees, women, back to the Taliban to be tortured or killed.

As you say most people are only concerned with the large groups of male immigrants who arrive in small boats with no documentation. So Farage does not need to send these women back to the Taliban, paying them for the privilege. I believe the Taliban has recently  removed all internet connection to exert control.

I don't agree with sending women to their death so for that reason alone I couldn't vote Reform.

So the UN judge that declared the UK owe 18 Trillion in Reparations needs to learn things? I think we must have engaged in slavery somewhat. Didn't we also used to go around sticking flags in.countries and declare it ours?

You believe the Judge is in error? I don't agree with historical  financial reparations btw but it's not just me that needs to learn things ..

This I believe is the most crucial way to go forward on.The matter, not back..

In response to the BBC's request for comment, the UK government pointed to comments made by Foreign Minister David Rutley in Parliament earlier this year.

He said: "We acknowledge the role of British authorities in enabling the slave trade for many years before being the first global force to drive the end of the slave trade in the British empire."

He said the government believes "the most effective way for the UK to respond to the cruelty of the past is to ensure that current and future generations do not forget what happened, that we address racism, and that we continue to work together to tackle today's challenges".

TMy only concern is with the divisive media rhetoric Reform and now The Tories insists on having we are no longer doing the underlined. Things have changed so much in only a few years.

Just because we don't want fighting men invading this country doesn't mean we need to learn lessons!

I've answered this before, so I'm not going to again!

I will vote Reform, up to you who you vote.

I don't even know how this 'reparations' conversation has become a thing.  It's explained in another article if you click the link in the original one how these particular reparations came to be. I agree the concept itself is flawed for the reasons you gave .

The slave trade was the status quo for mankind until very recently. No country was responsible nor was only one group victims.

I agree that people should learn things..

The UN recently had Saudi running the human rights division.

I don't give a flying fuck what a UN judge says..

You can either learn about the history of slavery or not..

I don't care..

I don't recall you answering it Mags but you don't have to if you don't want to.

But I don't want to leave  the ECHR in its entirety. It's far more beneficial instead to amend it so we can ensure immigrants leave but remain within it so we can retain our basic freedoms like Labour intends  to. I don't see why all voters should  lose their freedoms so an agreement should be made that just Reform voters  agree  to leave the ECHR entirely.

It makes no sense to give away our freedoms and be alone with Russia when we can keep our rights AND amend the outdated rulings about immigration as Labour (and basic common sense ) suggests.
