I read a book about Son of Sam 30+ years ago - the things that stuck with me were that he used to creep up to cars and shoot young couples, and that he heard voices in his head, maybe from a dog.
A good book about murderers is the Jigsaw Man by Paul Britton, a forensic pyschologist - he covers lots of famous cases, including Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common, and the honey trap set up to wrongfully snare Colin Stagg
I'll keep an eye out for that. I love reading, and while I don't like crime fiction i do like real life crime stories.

Edit: my memory, or lack of, was bugging me re the dog so found this via Google AI…
” Serial killer David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam") initially claimed that demonic voices instructing him to murder were communicated to him through his neighbor's Labrador Retriever, "Harvey," which belonged to a man named Sam Carr. He later confessed that the talking dog story was a complete fabrication.
Berkowitz admitted the deception to authorities and mental health experts in 1979, stating he invented the demon-possessed dog tale to establish an insanity defense and evade responsibility for his crimes. In reality, the voices were a hoax he used to manipulate the public. He ultimately pleaded guilty to the murders and is serving consecutive life sentences.”
Well cleared up anon - I had it in my head that the dog was called Sam, not the dog owner!
I'll keep an eye out for that. I love reading, and while I don't like crime fiction i do like real life crime stories.
There's a lot of gruesome details that were kept out of the news at the time. He also covers the Jamie Bulger murder and Fred and Rosemary West.
He talks about the thigh bones of one on the skeletons dug up in the West's garden - it had markings on it that indicated the flesh was carved off similar to how you would carve a kebab.
