This isn't Dogs, so nobody is going to condemn you for sharing your life experiences.

Yeah, I know, Diggs…but I do sometimes wonder if any of the Dogs ghouls might be lurking around 🤷🏻‍♀️ But okay, thanks.

Disclaimer: I’m gonna name drop a bit here, because the ‘poshness’ of the places I’m about to mention is relevant.

My husband was a lifelong friend of a man he was at Uni with. This guy was a very big deal in his own country. He used to travel to London a couple of times a year, and his embassy would always provide a couple of security people to assist him throughout his
stay.

We’d usually get together for dinner whenever he was around.  On the night I want to mention, he invited us to Crockford’s to play some blackjack/roulette, and then go on to dinner at Annabel’s nightclub (he was a member at both, natch 😂).

It’s fair to say both these clubs truly were among London’s upper echelons of places to go - private members and guests only, doormen in top hat and tails, valet parking, the whole shebang.  And all that’s before you stepped foot inside the cocoon of opulent elegance.

On that particular very rainy night, my husband let us know that he was running late, and asked to meet us at Annabel’s.  Mr Big said he’d pick me up so we could have a drink at Crockford’s first, and we’d all meet up at Annabel’s later.

I was wearing a bright cobalt blue Shantung silk dress that night (the bright blue colour is very relevant). It was very fitted, and the narrow skirt tapered snugly into the knees. The point is, the dress was like a second skin and, being silk, there simply was no ‘give’ to it at all!

Mr Big came to pick me up. I thought we’d be travelling in an embassy Merc the security guys would be driving. But no - Mr Big decided to hire a Ferrari Testarossa during his visit. Beautiful car, obviously.  But holy crap, a Testarossa is incredibly low-slung! Getting into it was like a feeling of going down an entire floor in an elevator.

I miraculously managed to manoeuvre that tight dress and spiky heels into it without a wardrobe malfunction and off we roared, with the security car following on.

Remember I said rain was bucketing down that night?  We pulled up at Crockford’s, and 2 doormen rushed over with huge umbrellas. And that’s when my luck ran out.

As I was trying to swing my legs round to hoik myself up and out of that car, the heel of my shoe got caught in the doorjamb, and my unforgiving tight skirt took its revenge. I was stuck. The doorman looked quite distressed as he offered his arm to help prise me out.

I eventually managed to slide around and squirm my way out…..only to then slip away from the doorman’s helpful arm and umbrella, and my arse landed squarely into a very deep puddle. The entire back of my bright blue dress immediately turned a squishy black. By the time I was fully back on my feet, I was soaking wet.

People entering Crockford’s, and lining up in the cars behind us, were all giving me pitying side-eye looks. Mr Big was practically peeing himself laughing, and he insisted the security guys would drive me home and wait for me to sort myself out.

When I walked into Annabel’s later that evening (wearing a LYCRA dress!!😂), my husband muttered “You look nice, luv….” 🤬

 lollol

You have painted a very vivid picture, and I really feel for you, but I have to ask...was the silk dress ruined? cry

@ Syl…not quite vivid enough 😂 I forgot to mention that I had already managed to get one foot out of the car, when the second heel rammed itself into the doorjamb. So there I was - sitting at near-pavement level - in a narrow skirt that allowed zero room for manoeuvre, trying to dislodge my other foot. I had to slip my foot out of the jammed shoe, and ended up hoping around on one foot until the doorman managed to dislodge the shoe.

And that’s when my arse caused a mini tsunami in that puddle. You had to be there, Syl 😂

As for the dress - 🗑️ binned the next day! ragga

I'm sure you pulled it off with some aplomb...(.f that was ever possible).lol

My pet hate is tight skirts that don't give...they are the cause of many a mishap, I know to my cost, though not as spectacularly as you do. wink

Shame about the dress Vam. Silk is one of those materials that don't take kindly to not being treated like royalty.

I assume pubs have live music but do they have dance floors where a grandpa like me can spin a pretty girl?.

 Yes, yes they do.

I was in the pub on Friday a few weeks ago and they had a DJ playing 80s music and a dancefloor which was heaving for a local. It was great fun.

Dancing, singing and drinking go hand in hand.

This is Manchester city centre in the day time.  It's even worse in the evening, a complete no go zone.

The problem with social media, if trouble is planned to go off somewhere, it'll soon spread, that's why crowds gather.

Another huge problem, there are people with video cameras seeking out trouble, like the ones you have posted in the past, they seek out trouble, aggravate it, record it, and get paid for putting it online.

There are parts of Manchester that's rough, it's a big city, there will always be some idiots in any big city, Piccadilly is one of the places they gather, but there are other parts, where some lovely bars and restaurants are, that seldom see trouble. We went to town a couple of weeks ago, had lunch sat outside, it was busy, friendly, and we had a good day there doing some shopping.

I used to love going into town.  Not anymore.  I used to work in a restaurant called Persia, just off Deansgate.  I'd quite happily finish at around 1am and walk back to my car on my own.  You'd see loads of blokes queueing to get into Hooters.  Not a scrap of trouble and I was never bothered by anyone.  Sure, parts of Manchester are lovely still, but there's no way I'd visit town these days, not even the Xmas markets.  I don't feel safe.

That's a shame. I do feel safe, tbh, the town I live in has more nutters than I have ever seen in Manchester....obviously I don't wander round Piccadilly after dark.
I don't go as often, because our taste has changed. We prefer quieter restaurants driving out rather than the hubbub of the big city.
When we worked in town we were younger....I do think the night-life in cities like Manchester are more for the young than the old.

Since my eldest has gone to Uni I have a lot more time to for myself in the evenings rather than driving her to classes / rehearsals / performances etc.

I know there's a perception that London is a crime ridden hellhole with roving gangs of machete wielding thugs roaming the streets but the area where I live? Nah. It's pretty safe with a lively local scene.

😳 I would, if I could make out the words they’re singing.  I think I may have heard…

el cielo = the sky

palabras = words

(& maybe) amor = love

That’s about it, sorry 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not the greatest acoustics on my cell phone..

And when certain songs come on, our Latino friends break out the loud "aye, aye, aye". Drowns out the words in a language I speak as well as a toddler..
