Why do some black Americans say 'axe' instead of 'ask'? Maddog?
It's called "ebonics".
We (like you) have regionalized accents and I guess that word came from a southern accent. Most black folks can trace their roots back to the south..
I think a lot of folks that know better still use it when hanging with their tribe.
My accent gets stronger when I'm in my tribe, but I try to correctly say words, albeit with my accent..
like 'howdy' and 'yee haaa' ?
I do say howdy all of the time, but it would sound much different than if you said it.
"Fixin to" is another phrase I use a lot and would sound silly in your accent..
Colloquialisms are one thing. We all use them. Speaking like an illiterate buffoon is another. You expect that from kids but not adults. Better yourself. Educate yourself. Don't a soon that folks don't be laughing thay's tits off at you for speaking like a moron.

No doubt one should be educated enough to converse properly and coherently..
I don't get the black accent that some young men try to emulate nowadays... or the Gallagher brothers exaggerated Mancunian twang that makes them sound illiterate. I was born and brought up in Salford, a poor area, but I can speak properly at least.

True. It's ridiculous. People try to copy London accent, it's rubbish.
Just speak as you do, stop copying others accents.
A bit like (going in the other direction of exaggerated black/Gallagher speak) people put on a posh phone voice ...as if it's not obvious it's so fake.

Insecurity. Like it makes them extra 'hard' or streetwise, or 'gangsta'. It's rather pathetic. I was born in London and never really lost a southern accent in spite of growing up in Southport and living in Manchester for forty odd years.

You have a very nice speaking voice. I have a northern accent, and like many people...I hate the sound of my own voice.

I can't stand my voice. I wish I had a voice like Judy Dench.
