I was thinking about Haaland, mainly because he is so fascinating to watch, both on and off the pitch.
But his last game was pretty bad, he fouled a couple of players near the goal, didn't score, contributed nothing to the game whilst the other players ran themselves ragged, and then he was taken off early.
Surely if he had a few matches like this, he would go from hero to zero pretty quickly. Football is a very fickle game.

Do you happen to know what the rules are around something like this? Goals are scored legitimately by deflections, such as deflections off another player, or off a goalpost, so what would make this deflection different?
An overhead cable is considered to be a foreign object, so play is stopped and then restarted with a dropped ball. Goalposts are part of the playing surface, and players are not foreign objects, but an essential part of the game!
Similar happens in golf - it's tough shit if a player hits the ball into a bush or against a tree, and it will cost him a penalty shot. But if he gets stuck behind an advertising hoarding or camera tower, he will get a free drop

Out of interest, what if it's deflected off the referee and goes in?

Yep. That push was very deliberate. Tbf, the cameras didn’t show what may have led up to it - maybe the England player was excessively hanging onto to Haaland. But Red’s right in saying that foul was the reason Belgium’s goal was disallowed.
This World Cup has been quite a revelation in taking some of the shine off some of the top players, who are hero-worshipped the whole world over.
Not least, the sainted Lionel Messi…
A great example to kids who want to grow up and be him 🙄

It used to count as a goal, and there were some isolated cases of referees 'scoring' but the rules have now changed.
If the ball hits the ref now, and it is considered a game changing incident like a goal, or getting in the way of an attack etc, the game is stopped and the ball is dropped at the feet of a player from the team who were hindered.
If it hits the ref and doesn't change much, ie the ball still reaches the player the pass was intended for, then play continues.

‘Watching those clips, they look so extreme I wondered if they were AI altered’ I wondered the same about at least one of the clips, Syl. If any are AI-generated, then my apologies. It’s very hard to know for certain what’s real online anymore 🤷🏻♀️
But this most definitely isn’t AI. I watched this happen live on my TV screen. It’s Messi sauntering over to the Egyptian team’s dugout after the match, to insolently ask why they were so angry. It takes a special kind of arrogance to even think of doing that. Why not just take his win and eff off?

I have watched a video where he definately did hit an opponent, it was in 2021 and he was suspended for 2 matches....so either those vids were AI, or he is up to his old tricks.

I have to say one of the best things about this World Cup is players like Haaland and Bellingham getting so much exposure. Both seem like great lads, close to their families, superb at what they do. Much better role models for young men than the Andrew Tates or HSTikkyTokkys of this world.
Really looking forward to the Spain v France game tonight. It should be absolute cinema.
Hard to pick it but I think Spain will edge the win because they seem far more solid at the back than France, who can definitely be got at. The question is whether Spain can manage to contain France's lethal front line.

Spain have the best stats in every defensive area, and France have most of the best attacking stats, so on paper it look like a attack V defence type of game, but most of those stats came against inferior opposition, so may not play out like that tonight.
I don't think Deschamp can afford to play his 4 attackers from the start. Mbappe and Olise will almost certainly start, but I think either Dembele or Barcola, maybe even both, will be replaced by more defensive midfielders, otherwise Spain may overrun them with their high possession football
Yamal has been a big disappointment so far, and is due a good game. Olmo has had a cracking WC though and could be the danger man. Then of course there is the Arsenal super sub Merino - can he come and score a hat trick of late winners?

Lol...he has certainly embraced the culture.
I agree about Haaland and Bellingham; I also hope Marcus Rashford gets the chance to shine too. So far he hasn't had the opportunities apart from scoring one goal when he did get the chance to play.
Vam, like you, and I think Mags, too this world cup has really drawn us in. We are away at the weekend, but we will find a TV and watch the final if we are still in there. (fingers crossed)

I love the World Cup Syl. If we beat the Argies I reckon we can win the World Cup. Hopefully.

I hope so too. I have watched a few clips of Messi, their star player, he is arrogant and a play actor, maybe he will go into films when his footy career is over, though he doesn't have the looks of some players, or the charisma of a Jones or a Cantana...so I doubt it.

This x 💯
And although I’m still a bit ‘meh 🤷🏻♀️’ about Haaland shoving an England player to the ground, I‘ll kinda miss seeing him play. Once I find out which English League team he plays for, I might even be tempted to try and watch a few matches.
That would really be a first for me! 😂

Yeah, I’ve been wondering about that too. From what I know of him, he’s a superb player - in addition to all the work he does for at risk/underprivileged youth groups.
And I’ve absolutely been drawn in with this one (despite 🇮🇹Italia’s absence 🥺). Good luck tomorrow 🏴ENGLAND! Hope they make Messi weep big fat salty tears 👏🏻👏🏻
