I've always had a soft spot for the Dutch - Cruyff was a great role model for a kid - I tried to emulate him when I played for my school, but failed miserably! As an Arsenal fan, Bergkamp was the best player I ever saw, not just for Arsenal, but for anyone, including Henry.

I loved the Dutch total football back then, whereby any outfield player could play in any position. Cruyff gave the best advice as well when playing against 10 men - man mark all 9 outfield players, but give your spare player, the most creative, free rein to do what he wants, and he will cause havoc!

One of my favourite WC goals ever. Bergkamp scoring the 90th minute winner V Argentina in the 98 quarter-finals. What an occasion - the skill involved. a massive crowd going mental, the traditional team colours, and a crazy commentator!

Same, and TBH I looked up to Johan Cruyff as a kid more than Pele and Maradona. Who knows what would have happened if his family hadn't got kidnapped before the 1978 World Cup and his psychological state had been different.

I also preferred Bergkampf over Henry but it was close! I don't know if Arteta's Arsenal squad will go on to be the best of all time but the Invincibles will always be legendary. Campbell, Cole, Ljunberg, Viera, Pires along with impact subs like Ray Parlour. What an era.

I remember watching Bergkampf score against Argentina in 98. Happy times.

Do the Dutch still play the 3-4-3?

That's all I know about the Dutch as some of my daughters coaches called that formation the Dutch system..

They traditionally played a 4-3-3 with the wingbacks being attacking (Johan Cruyff then popularised the 3-4-3 formation while coaching.)

They now experiment with different formations like most modern teams.

Welcome to America..😉😎

LOL - I wouldn't expect to see that at a football match.

Having said that I'm sure I've seen cheerleaders at Selhurst Park.

There are far more attractive 40 year olds willing to hang out with a 60 year old than 60 year old women that look like that.

And it's not like I run around asking women their age anyway. If you're attractive I might buy you a drink, strike up a conversation or ask you to dance.

Heck some nights I just talk to other guys.

But what I'm not going to do is stay at home. I'm a social creature that likes to mingle with mankind. I have a bit of FOMO..

That’s very charitable of you 😂 But I have a question: On average, how many times do you (as I think the Brits say) get ‘knocked back’?

Also, why did the WC footie thread evolve into the pros and cons of your social life preferences and who you find shagable?

I only popped in to whine that 🇮🇹 Italia 🇮🇹 - 4-time World Cup winners - didn’t even manage to qualify again (for the third consecutive time!!) cry

Yep wink Given that Italia is out of the running - or even IN the effin running! snooty - I’m rooting for Ing-er-land too!

Although, a Spain win would be great - cos every single Spanish service provider will be in a happy smiling mood, and a supermarket checkout would be a serene experience 🤣

Knocked back as in told no for a dance or what? I would say 25% of the girls say no to a dance. Fewer say no to a drink.

I don't really have a game plan so if I like a song I may ask a girl way out of my league for a dance. Girls around here are friendly and people dance understanding its going no where off the dance floor. The tourists are probably just trying to match the vibe and not be rude. I also know girls that are regulars around the area. Sometimes they grab me to dance. And that's all they want from me..

Some nights I don't dance with anyone and just talk to people, most of which are guys..

I'm not exactly sure why this thread devolved..I think some folks think my behavior and admiration of pretty women is weird and I should stay home or at least stay away from any woman not plus or minus 10 years my age..🤷

I'll consider that when I get old..😉

As for the Italians, it seems strange that they didn't make it but Cape Verde and Haiti did..

I think that was my fault....my tongue in cheek reply seemed to cause a little bit of upset.lol

"Maddog, you sound like a stalker.

You need to act your age and settle down with a matronly 60 year old....one who is within your reach. wink"

Dawg … ‘As for the Italians, it seems strange that they didn't make it but Cape Verde and Haiti did.’

snooty Don’t. Just don’t… 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s kinda bittersweet to know that several of the non-Italian nationals who feature prominently in Italia’s Serie A league, are playing in their own countries’ national teams at the World Cup.

 And why the hell not?

I‘m sensing that the locals don’t seem too impressed, though 😂

Texans are so insular. If they ever heard of the words ‘detente cordiale’, they probably figure it‘s a new fangled dental treatment or maybe a fancy schmanzy toothpaste brand 😂

Texans are probably the least insular people on the planet. We are annoyingly friendly and outgoing.

That's a rodeo in a tourist area during the week. Look at that crowd again. How many Western hats, jeans and buckles do you see?

The locals are at work..😉

Do Texans know French phrases? Maybe a few from Louisiana.

Are we insular?

That has to be the silliest thing I've heard.

😂 Just a little payback for all your past jabs at Italians  😜

Actually, throughout my personal experience when I lived and worked in the US, I always found most Americans in general to be very friendly, welcoming and good natured.

Anyway…are you watching the match? It’s shaping up to be a good one. I’m even enjoying the British ad breaks 😂

I'm trying to get some work done, so no footie right now.

And any jabs I take at Italians are accurate. If you had said Texans were loud and overly talkative I'd have agreed with you. We walk right up to strangers and start talking.
