I'm going to the zoo in an hour with 4 grandkids. I'm not really into zoos, but they are. The animals are well taken care of. I'll admit their life is unlike that of a wild animal. Better in some ways, worse in others.

Let's take horses in America. Wild horses out west live 10 years less than a horse living on 2 acres in Texas. And it's death is far more gruesome. The "natural" world sounds great in a movie. It's brutal, violent and a daily fight for survival.

Also, I don't think many zoo animals ever lived in the wild..They are offspring of other zoo animals. They don't know how to live in the wild and wouldn't last longer than a beagle dropped off in a national forest in Colorado..

Would you rather live a short fulfilled free life or ten years longer in a cage?

I imagine all animals in today's zoos were born in captivity, it doesn't make it right though....just as many animals performing in circuses knew no other life.

Wild animals in their natural habitat live a far more precarious life than they do when costled in a cage, but it's their natural life they are living.
Some research has shown that up to 80% of animals in zoos suffer from abnormal repetitive behaviour linked to psychological illness.

Zoo animals could still be protected in safari parks. Introduce them slowly, and I'm sure they would still breed and live their lives in a far more natural habitat suited to them.

There's a guy in Africa I think, called the Lion Whisperer.  He's been rescuing them for nigh on 30 yrs.  They have so much space, acres and acres of land.    He has Hyenas, Black.Panthers aswell as lions.  They all know him.  It's a great to watch him interact with them.

They are so healthy, happy.  If they were in the wild they would be shot by hunters.  Elephants are shot for their tusks.

The men working there hunt these hunters, try to stop them.

Hunters are dispicable lowlives!

I have read a bit about him Mags, Kevin Richardson.

I think perhaps the young man who was killed by the tiger a couple of days ago, thought he could communicate with them in some way.

It's really sad, he was obviously unwell, I can't imagine what his family are going through.

Yes Kevin Richardson.  I've watched him for a few yrs, lovely kind man.. Genuinely loves his animals too.

Yes many are bred in Zoos now. I do wish they were free though.

Hunters are not poachers any more than soldiers are murderers.

Obviously a hunter could be a poacher too and a soldier could be a murderer, but the terms are not interchangeable..

That's a good question. I think most people voluntarily give up a lot of freedoms for security and comfort. Especially as they get older.

 We don't need to!

And neither do zoo animals. We're both pretty domesticated.

We do have more choices than a zoo animal or a pet. But we definitely don't have the freedom of lion living in Africa.

We have choices, and if we want freedom we can always choose a simpler lifestyle, off grid, more self sufficient, most people just dont choose to live like that.
